Hard-edged conservative Newt Gingrich, who honed his political marksmanship in Atlanta’s suburbs, has gone soft when it comes to raising presidential campaign bucks. Brother, can you spare a Viagra?
For the first three months of the year, Gingrich managed to scrape together $53,000, which in presidential campaigns is about as helpful as rubbing two pennies together. You’d think Gingrich, who has raised tens of millions in donations to his political action committee, might have better luck. But the field of potential GOP candidates is crowded with same-sex marriage bigots like Gingrich. And his messy personal life – including a couple of marriages and affairs – could also be causing him trouble.
Guess his recent cash-and-carry trip through Atlanta didn’t keep his fundraising from going limp.
How’s that $53,000 compare to potential GOP competitors? The anti-gay Tea Party darling Rep. Michele Bachman brought in $2.2 million. Crazy does pay, apparently. Mitt Romney scored $1.9 million.
Gingrich told a small group of New Hampshire Republicans on Wednesday that he’ll make his final decision about launching an official presidential campaign early next month.
