Bucks struggle to keep season on track

A three-week break in the schedule didn’t treat the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club well when the team stepped back on the field March 22, dropping its second match this season to the Birmingham Vulcans.

The 55-3 lose puts the Bucks at 1-5, though the team faces the Nashville Grizzles on Saturday. The Bucks notched their only win of the season against the Grizzles on Feb. 23. Three matches remain before the Bucks end their spring schedule – April 5, April 19 and May 10.

“We had three weeks since our last match and it showed,” says Bullet Manale, the club’s president. “We came out flat and played that way the whole match.”

But Manale says the team’s overall fitness level is improving, as are their scrums, lineouts and penalty plays.

“I think we will bring a lot more energy this week [against Nashville} and get back on track,” he says.

The Bucks have several off-the-field events scheduled, including a beer bust (April 13), bar nights (April 19 and May 17) and Purple Dress Run (April 26), an annual fund-raiser that this year benefits YouthPride. Check the Buck’s web site for details.
