Brenda Wood to Coke’s diversity haters: Piss off

The only thing 11Alive's Brenda Wood needed on Monday was a snap. That would be the perfect finish to her delicious takedown of bigots whining that Coke's Super Bowl ad was too diverse and too gay.

Wood delivered the rebuttal during her “Last Word” segment, calling the controversy over the ad “outrageous.” The spot that aired during Sunday's game features families from diverse backgrounds, including two gay dads, as bilingual American women sing “America the Beautiful.”

Wood was having none of it from the haters.

“The quote on the Statue of Liberty doesn't say give me your English-speaking only, Christian-believing heterosexual masses,” she says.

It gets better when Wood reminds listeners that the song was written by lesbian Katharine Lee Bates.
