Thousands of lesbians – even a few gay men – filled the Georgia Freight Depot on Saturday to hear R&B singer Brandy and celebrate Atlanta Black Gay Pride.
The Grammy-winning singer (top photo) hit the stage about 2:30 a.m. for a 15-minute set as part of the “Big Bang Event” from Traxx Girls. From there, she was shuttled to Traxx Atlanta in Decatur to perform for an equally-large crowd of mostly gay men.
Brandy’s appearances were the highlight of an expected diva fest for Black Gay Pride that fizzled when two appearances by Mary J. Blige flopped amid allegations of fraud by one nightlife promoter; another said lagging ticket sales led to the cancellation.
Brandy’s appearance sent a buzz through the crowd, who enjoyed go-go dancers, drinks and free-flowing fun before she hit the stage. Atlanta singer Nivea briefly appeared on stage before Brandy, but did not perform.
Brandy, who tweeted her anticipation ahead of the Atlanta appearances, thanked her fans after the late night. She even asked for a link to video of the performances to share with her daughter, Sy’rai.
The love from all the starz and fans at Traxx tonight helped me to be as free as a bird tonight:) thank you for bringing out the best in me!
