Some gay folks head to church on Easter, dusting off their Sunday best for the annual holy day pilgrimage. Others grab their best bonnets and hit the drag races with the Armorettes.
The latter was the case for hundreds of people on Sunday, some of whom donned their drag best for the annual event. This year, participants turned the Piedmont Avenue parking lot behind Blake’s into a patio playground of drag performances, hunks stripping off their shirts to celebrate the arrival of warm weather, contests and an Easter celebration fit for, well, queens.
The Armorettes host the event and replaced their usual weekly show with the Easter Drag Races, interspersing their lip-synching performances among contests that included trash bag fashion, musical chairs, condom blow-up, a drag race, Jell-O shooter toss and naming the best Easter bonnet. There were plenty of contestants.
Bake’s cordoned off the parking lot, flushed out their bartenders and served cocktails all afternoon. The event kicked off at 4 p.m. and continued for hours, even after the heat proved overwhelming for the sound system.
