The best gay things to do in Atlanta this weekend

Go long! The weekend sure does. This week’s local gay events listing of course includes all of the Joining Hearts Weekend stuff through Sunday. But that’s just the tip of LGBT ATL shows, sports, soirees and surprises. Click the red event links for even more details.

Friday, July 19
Joining Hearts Weekend Kickoff with DJ Micky Friedmann (top photo) starts a tidal wave of dance parties through Sunday surrounding gay Atlanta’s biggest summer charity event series. Get down to the sound of the sexy international mixmaster to heat things up with an opening set by DJ Mike Pope @ Heretic, 9 p.m. Check out photos of Friedmann’s last visit, and Friedmann barely dressed.

Philip Bonneau’s “Ugly Simple Truths” (second photo) opens a show based on our mental shadow selves – addictions, loss, battles, relationships and more – that we tend not talk about. It’s sure to draw a crowd to the popular gay Atlanta artist and photographer’s only local 2013 show @ Suite Spot, 6 p.m. You remember Bonneau. He of the sexy gay Spider-Man Kiss and the queered up Heroes & Villains series sensation.

Atlanta Bucks 10th Anniversary Weekend celebrates Atlanta’s gay rugby team with events through Sunday. Get things started with plenty of grub during the annual Atlanta Bucks Awards Banquet @ Colonnade, 7 p.m. reception and 8 p.m. dinner.

Dine Out For Pride: Sweet Cheats Food, Flicks & Fun invites you to this unique boutique sweet shop in Cabbagetown for a screening of “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.” A portion of your yummy sweets benefiting Atlanta Pride @ Sweet Cheats, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Hannah Thomas Band (third photo) puts on a show by an openly gay Country-Rock musician who’s been out way longer than that “All-American Boy.” Check her out @ Eddie’s Attic, 7:30 p.m.

Frisky Monkey is the duo featuring gay crooner Juan Cezar. They give you a smooth groove into the weekend with opening act Tabetha Durham @ Smith’s Olde Bar, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Dinner & A Movie: “Death Becomes Her” kicks off Jungle’s Friday with great food and drink specials alongside the movie in the Jungle Room @ Jungle, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Then it’s The Other Show with special guest host Celeste Holmes, the usual cast of crazies and special guests Jasmine Antoinette and Kryean Kally, 9:30 p.m. Stick around for the Black & White Ball with the Secretroom partiers in the main room, 10 p.m.

“I’m So Excited” is the new film from Pedro Almodovar, the gay Spanish filmmaker behind “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “Talk To Her” and “All About My Mother.” His latest opens for a limited run today @ Midtown Art Cinema.

Come Together For A Brother puts your Jell-O shots and bucket donations toward medical expenses for the Eagle’s Anthony, who is hospitalized without health insurance. Bring your ones, fives, tens and 20s for a Friday party with extra purpose @ Atlanta Eagle, 10 p.m.

The Fab Five with Morgan McMichaels (fourth photo) adds the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” queen to the lineup of Atlanta’s weekly drag revue of glamazons hosted by Angelica D’Paige @ Burkhart’s, 11 p.m. View our photos of her amazing Thursday performance.

BanjeeGirl Friday gets your lesbian weekend started with a DJ-driven dance party and all the ladies you can handle with the TraxxGirls promoters @ My Sister’s Room, 9 p.m.

Got Leche? celebrates the weekend each and every Friday with Atlanta’s weekly gay Latin night @ Club Rush, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.


Saturday, July 20
Atlanta Bucks 10th Anniversary Weekend (fifth photo) continues. Get on board the gay rugby team train early and stay to the last stop. Bucks Rugby Family Reunion & Beer Bust, first @ Walker Park, 11 a.m. followed by beer bust @ Mixx, 3 p.m., and Bucks Anniversary Bar Night @ Eagle, 10 p.m.

Georgia Equality HIV Strategy Meet & Greet lets you get to know the story of Equality Foundation board member Alejandro Lopez and his vision for a new HIV & AIDS advocacy journey @ Rush Center, 2:30 p.m.

Rebecca Loebe, formerly of the Voice and always of Atlanta, hasn’t performed here since her “Circus Heart” album release last year. Lesbians who love croony guitar licks gather @ Eddie’s Attic, 7 p.m.

Joining Hearts 26 with DJ Joe Geauthreaux (sixth photo). It’s all come down to this. Gay Atlanta’s biggest summer pool party for charity gathers the hottest boys for drinks, fun in the sun and fundraising for Jerusalem House and AID Atlanta. Prepare to get shirtless and dance your ass off @ Piedmont Park Aquatic Center, 4 p.m. – 11 p.m. As you prepare, check out the sexy things those Joining Hearts gays love. Navigating QuarterLife Crisis Part 1. Author Kenya Jackson visits Atlanta’s lesbian-feminist bookstore to talk about her book “empty. s p a c e. Where’s My Stuff?” and how to manage next steps with wisdom and skill @ Charis Books & More, 7:30 p.m.

Traffic Light Glow Party invites ladies to show off their status with red for taken, yellow for maybe and green for single. Lesbians know where to dance their ass off each week, and this party shakes things up with DJ beats and go-go girls in the dark @ My Sister’s Room, 9 p.m.

Disco Inferno Dance Party with Dames Aflame. The queer-inclusive burlesque troop cranks up the gold spandex and tube tops for a flashback Studio 54-style dance with lots of women who love women and a few of our guys too @ Hilton Atlanta Downtown, 9 p.m.

Joining Hearts Afterparty with DJs Rosabel keeps the JH fever set to high with the powerhouse DJ duo of Ralphi Rosario and Abel. Even if you don’t go to the pool party, pack into the writhing masses (seventh photo) @ Jungle, 10:30 p.m. Doors at 9 p.m. with front room as VIP. Advance tickets and Jungle VIP cards skip huge lines. Marietta Pride Staff Auction lets you bid on getting to know the entertainers and organizers of Marietta Pride while partying with the LGBT-OTP Saturday night dance and show crowd @ LeBuzz, Marietta, 11 p.m.

Extravaganza Show is the weekly fabulosity hosted by big, blonde and beautiful Shavonna B. Brooks and cast @ Burkhart’s, 11 p.m.


Sunday, July 21
Hotlanta Softball League Commissioner’s Cup pitches and catches Atlanta’s gay softball teams (eighth photo) through their annual title round @ Metro Softball Complex. Games begin at 9 a.m. As always, the HSL Extra Innings Beer Bust follows rain or shine, this week hosted by Masters Team Atlanta Leathermen @ Eclectic Bistro & Bar, 4 p.m.

Cotillion Caliente Pool Party benefits AID Atlanta with the gay men of Atlanta Cotillion for AID Atlanta with a rooftop skyline view @ Century Skyline Apartments, 1 p.m.

Atlanta Bucks Anniversary Weekend wraps things up for the gay rugby team’s 10-year celebration with the Bucks Sunday Funday Brunch @ Joe’s, 11: 30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Joining Hearts Closing Party Tea Dance (bottom photo) winds up the weekend of fun and fundraising with DJs Isaac Escalante and gay Atlanta’s own Corey David. Phoenix in the house and go-go boys shakin’ it @ Jungle, 7 p.m.

The Armorettes do their weekly camp drag for charity in their ongoing mission to bring bawdy drag and donated tips to the HIV/AIDS fight in Atlanta @ Burkhart’s, 8 p.m.

Flashback Showgirls is the drag show that takes you back, all the way back to a new decade each time. Lady Shabazz leads the cast @ 10th & Piedmont, 8 p.m.
