The best gay things to do in Atlanta this weekend

Nothing says spring has sprung like gay jocks. Spring yourself from the everyday with a weekend full of LGBT sports, plus shows, parties, special guests and a full slate of gay green St. Pat’s festivities.

Friday, March 14
“Stranger By the Lake” (top photo). The queer Cannes darling touted around the world as the next great gay drama, opens for a limited run. Things get way sexy before they get way crazy @ Midtown Art Cinema, through Thursday March 20. Same bat time, same bat place for the “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me” documentary about the Broadway legend.

Decatur Women’s Sports Softball Opening Ceremony kicks off spring season of Friday nights for the ladies who pitch and catch (second photo). Get in the game @ Kelley C. Cofer Park, Tucker, 6:30 p.m. Opening Ceremonies honor late, great Ria Pell.

The Other Show offers the most unique drag cabaret in town with a creative cast that blasts your expectations. She’s so unusual @ Jungle, 9:30 p.m. Show up early for a different flick each week and a great menu during Dinner & A Movie, 7:30 p.m.

Femme Fatale with Destiny Brooks and Justice Tyana Taylor puts the drag glamazons on display each week. Get your singles ready for premiere Atlanta queens @ Burkhart’s, 11 p.m.

Fur pulls all the guys onto gay Atlanta’s hot man-on-man dance floor, this week with DJ Stan Jackson @ Heretic, 10 p.m.

Otter Chaos celebrates the fur on your boy with fuzzy guys of all shapes and sizes and their admirers. Charlottes sexy DJ Atomic (third photo) pumps the dub and house @ Atlanta Eagle, 10 p.m.

Daring Divas lays it on thick. Lena Lust, Sawnna Brooks, Lateasha Shuntel, Chavon Scott and Niesha Dupree @ Blake’s, 11 p.m.

Ladies Lounge: She Does It for the Green Edition. Get your lesbian weekend started with a DJ-driven dance party and scores of ladies with the TraxxGirls promoters @ My Sister’s Room, 9 p.m.

Got Leche? weekly gay Latin night features stage shows, dancing and more @ Club Rush, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.


Saturday, March 15
Flag Football Pre-Season huddle up with the gay jocks of NFFLA as the 2014 teams scrimmage to dust off the winter rust @ Boulevard Crossing Park, 11 a.m. Or just join them after for the all-out, jam-packed annual Saint Patty’s Big Gay Margarita Bust (fourth photo) @ Zocalo, 5 p.m. You know how they get.

Women’s Rugby starts the spring season of the lesbian Harlequins team in a matchup against Indiana @ Rhodes Jordan Park, Lawrenceville, 1 p.m.

Hotlanta Classic XXII Volleyball. All the gay jocks smell spring coming, and this venerable tournament is no different. Serve, spike and volley with the gays of Hotlanta Volleyball or just cheer them on @ GA Tech Recreation Center, all day. Sunday too.

Chelsea Handler (fifth photo) visits to back her latest book “Uganda Be Kidding Me.” Hear from the gay-lovin, gay-beloved TV personality and comic in person @ A Cappella Books, 2 p.m. Then she does “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live” @ Fox Theatre, 8 p.m.

Armorettes Follies camp it up for tips toward the HIV/AIDS fight. The cast of crazies plus special guest Charmaine Sinclair get your Saturday started @ Heretic, 8 p.m.

Atlanta Freedom Bands: “Music of the East.” The LGBT band geeks are all grown up and moving you with the sound of their instruments. Join the musical journey of music from Korea, China, Indonesia and Singapore @ North Decatur Presbyterian Church, 8 p.m.

Roxie Watson (sixth photo) is Atlanta’s all-gay, all-girl alterna-grass band that makes your toes tap. They celebrate a new CD with a rousing show @ Variety Playhouse, 8 p.m. Read our in-depth interview.

St. Patty’s Bucks Bar Night celebrates the day of the Irish with the gay Atlanta Bucks Rugby team, hunky leprechaun bartenders and green Jell-O shots galore @ Atlanta Eagle, 10 p.m.

St. Patty’s Day Party: Get Lucky Edition brings all the girlies to the yard for a very Irish installment of the weekly East Atlanta lesbian throwdown @ My Sister’s Room, 9 p.m.

St. Patty’s LeBuzz Anniversary Party includes a Hot Gingers Contest to celebrate the bar’s birthday, plus a very special Divas Cabaret presents its drag-stravaganza for the suburban gays @ LeBuzz, Marietta, 10 p.m.

The Goddess Raven Returns (seventh photo). A local legend is back on her old ATL stomping grounds. The former Charlie Brown’s Cabaret beauty shows them how it’s done during a main-room edition of Ruby’s Redd Light District, this week with a Kylie Minogue CD Release Giveaway @ Jungle, 9 p.m. Stick around, honey. You’re just getting started. DJ Rob Reum puts the Backtreet into your step @ 10 p.m.

GlitterGlam werqs Saturday night with a drag show hosted by Genre and featuring Stasha Sanchez, Taejah Thomas “RuPaul’s” Trinity Bonet, Lateasha Shuntel and one lucky amateur guest performer every week. DJ beats and more cute boys than you can handle. It's also Irish Fest Weekend @ Blake’s, 10 p.m.

Synergy with Shawnna Brooks is the Saturday night show to rock your world @ Burkhart's, 11 p.m.

Haus of Stiel St. Patty’s Party with DJ Shane Stiel and Grace Towers. The stud-muffin spinmaster (eighth photo) returns to the scene of his last dance floor slaying for a greened-up dance event not to be missed @ Heretic, 10 p.m. This is what this duo does to you.

Midnight Madness drags out the dinner hour into party time with Angelica D’Paige @ 10th & Piedmont, 11 p.m.

Sunday, March 16
Saint Patrick’s Party with DJ Neon (bottom photo) lays down the beats and tips up the green beers. Neon rocks the booth, and there are St. Patty’s-themed giveaways and raffles all day as part of Irish Fest Weekend @ Blake’s, 12 noon.

Get Lucky Party wants guys in green for Lucky Leprechaun shots, green beer and Paddy’s Devil Apple Pie shots @ Ten, 12:30 p.m.

R4H Leprechauns & Leather Harness. This party re-introduces Atlanta to the Sunday tea dance with a leather twist and to the Ready 4 Hope guys working all year for AIDS Walk. DJ David Knapp beats it down in the bckspce @ Jungle, 7 p.m.

The Armorettes St. Patrick’s Day Show & Burkhart’s Pot O Gold Party. Get the night started with the weekly camp crazies against HIV/AIDS with special guest Gia Sunflowers, then stick around for Monica Van Pelt’s Pot O Gold show @ Burkhart’s, 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
