Atlanta Pride is sexing up its slate of Stonewall Month activities, spicing up scores of fundraisers, dinners and seminars in June with sexy cuddle bear Ben Cohen, porn legend ChiChi LaRue and hunky guy with two moms Zach Wahls.
LaRue, who partied during Atlanta Pride in 2012, hits town to hang with the go-go boys of BJ Roosters for a June 14 fundraiser; Cohen (photo) returns to Atlanta on June 18 for Out in the Stands with the Atlanta Braves, like last year; and Wahls, the straight Boy Scout from Iowa who gained fame in 2011 when he spoke passionately about his lesbian moms during a legislative hearing on gay marriage, arrives for a June 27 book signing.
Pride officials announced the events on Thursday, two days after it confirmed that the Georgia Aquarium will again host the big gay kickoff celebration and a few weeks after saying yes girl, they will burp rainbow again in October.
“We are excited to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn with a robust offering of educational programs, social gatherings, and community activities that run the gamut of the LGBTQ community in Atlanta,” says Atlanta Pride Executive Director Buck Cooke.
A few other events that stand out in the crowded Stonewall schedule: the draglicious 16th Annual East Point Possums Show on June 15, the jockular Pride Run on June 22, the tasty Stonewall Party at 10th & Piedmont on June 28 and the heroic 9th Annual Evening for Equality from Georgia Equality on June 29.
The full schedule and press release from Atlanta Pride:
The Atlanta Pride Committee (APC) is pleased to announce the full schedule of events in honor of the anniversary of Stonewall.
When the new guidelines for park usage were developed after the drought that forced all festivals out of Piedmont Park in 2008, Atlanta Pride moved to October in order to remain in their traditional home of Piedmont Park. That moved prompted a closer focus on the anniversary of Stonewall, a watermark in the LGBTQ community nationwide.
In 2009-2011, Atlanta Pride celebrated Stonewall Week to mark the historic anniversary within the LGBTQ movement; and in 2012, APC expanded from celebrating one week to celebrating for the entire month of June. In 2013, the schedule of events has once again proven to be exceptional in its offerings.
Atlanta Pride Executive Director, Buck Cooke, said of the newly published schedule, “While many in our community bemoan our move to October for the Atlanta Pride Festival, we are excited to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn with a robust offering of educational programs, social gatherings, and community activities that run the gamut of the LGBTQ community in Atlanta!”
Cooke continued, “One thing we want to do is educate our community about what actually happened on June 28, 1969, which is why we have included the event, “Stonewall 101” on June 6. During this event, we have a panel of Atlantans, some with connections to New York City in the late 60s, who can discuss what it was like being LGBTQ during that tumultuous time, so if you've ever wondered what happened at the Stonewall Inn or didn't even know what that was, here's a great chance to learn from some fantastic pioneers in our community.”
While a schedule listing is included, full event descriptions and additional information can be found via the Atlanta Pride website at: https://atlantapride.org/events/

Finally, Cooke noted, “There are a number of fundraisers scheduled during the month of June benefitting a range of organizations. Like many of our community partner organizations, Atlanta Pride is a nonprofit organization and we rely on the support of our donors, small business partners, and corporate sponsors in order to make our festival happen and to keep our festival free for everyone to enjoy. We hope individuals, couples, and families will participate in these fundraisers, which also allow Atlanta Pride to continue our year-round outreach and programming to build community and do important social justice work.”
