imageScores of gay men and lesbians were among the crowd that enjoyed the carnival-like atmosphere of the 4th Annual Backpack in the Park on Sunday.

The event collects backpacks filled with school supplies to be donated to children in need as they head back to school this fall. Though organizers didn’t yet have a final tally on the number of backpacks or gift cards donated on Sunday, they did expect to meet their goal of 1,200 packs.

The annual event, held this year Grant Park, took place earlier than its traditional late summer date to take advantage of Stonewall Week, the collection of events that served as a substitute for Atlanta Pride. That event was shifted to late October so it can return to Piedmont Park.

imageThe move for Backpack in the Park, organized by For the Kid in All of Us, didn’t appear to impact the event on Sunday, as the large crowd enjoyed a picnic, carnival games and the tunes of DJ Chris Griswold.
