Atlanta may get more anti-gay fast food

What semi-progressive Atlanta really needs is another fast-food burger joint. You know the type — cheap food served hot and fast with absolutely no regard for LGBT equality. Move over, Chick-fil-A. Bigot chicken may get a new friend in the ATL.

Tomorrow’s News Today hints that California-based Jack in the Box is flirting with Atlanta.

Sources tell me San Diego, California-based Jack in the Box is eyeing an initial entrance into the Atlanta market. If their plans come to fruition, they will enter a crowded market where Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Burger King, among others, all have significant representation.

But gay drive-through foodies shouldn’t get their mouths watering just yet. When it comes to how it treats LGBT employees, issues and customers, this chain falls somewhere between Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s. That’s not a compliment.

Jack in the Box scores a 15 on the Human Rights Campaign’s recent Corporate Equality Index. The company didn’t respond to HRC’s survey, but the organization graded them anyway – allowing the chain 15 points (out of 100) for including sexual orientation in its non-discrimination policy. Gender identity? Nope. Other LGBT-inclusive policies, benefits and business practices? Not so much.

Atlanta is already crowded with Chick-fil-A restaurants, the leader among fast-food chains that hate on gays. The company is headquartered here, gives out millions to anti-gay groups and criticism of the practice only emboldens them. They won’t participate in the Corporate Equality Index.

And then there’s Wendy’s, which until late 2011 was based in Atlanta. They score a sorry 30 on HRC’s rankings thanks to including sexual orientation and gender in its employee handbook.

Just for the record, Miami-based Burger King notches a 55 while McDonald’s scores a 75.
