The gays are taking NeNe Leakes of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" fame to a fancy dinner with President Obama on Saturday as a way to thank the reality TV star for being an LGBT ally. Which she is – between her gay baiting.
Leakes loves herself a gay sidekick on the popular Bravo reality show and is fond of talking about how she loves her some gay Atlanta. Along the way, she's provided some of the best – and worst – of the gayest moments on the show. And in early April, host Andy Cohen – who loves him some Blake's and Swinging Richards – chastised Leakes and her castmates for delighting in their "gay bashing attitudes" during an episode earlier in the season. It provided the latest example of Leakes – and other cast members – playing to offensive gay stereotypes.
On Saturday, Leakes is being escorted to the White House Correspondents Dinner by staffers of the Washington Blade, the long-running LGBT newspaper in D.C. The media outlet is also bringing former MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry. Via the Blade:
“Both of these women have been allies to the LGBT community in different ways and the Blade is happy to thank them for their visibility by inviting them to join our table at the White House Correspondents Dinner,” said Blade editor Kevin Naff, who will attend along with the Blade’s White House reporter, Chris Johnson.
The dinner marks the final appearance for President Obama.
Leakes is officially a drag queen, so she gets a bit of space when it comes to gay missteps. There's that whole "queen" slur controversy from Season 6. You know – the one where she got a pass from RuPaul and told Cohen she would kiss gay ass to make up for it.
But she's been side-by-side at the HRC Atlanta gala with Cohen (photo), done a NOH8 photo shoot, appeared at the gay bookstore, worked it at the gay-run fashion show and hired one gay assistant after another. So there's all of that. And strippers on "Ellen."
