Organizers have been planning for months, and early arrivals are already settled in. Now the national stage is set for Atlanta’s huge annual transgender conference.
This is the 19th year for the Southern Comfort Conference, which selected a “Heroes” theme for 2009. The four-day event of activities, getaways, seminars, workshops, a marketplace and even a talent show takes place at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel.
More than 75 speakers and presenters are scheduled, including Mariette Pathy Allen (photo), an author and filmmaker who won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for the conference-inclusive “Southern Comfort.”
The seminar schedule starts Thursday, with topics as diverse as “How to Get Read In 10 Seconds Flat” to “Normalizing the Non-traditional” and “Dating and Relationships.”
Excerpts from the event website:
Vendors, authors, entertainers and leaders from the entire spectrum of the transgender community will be in Atlanta to create a four-day symposium full of learning, networking and fun just for you!
There is something for everyone on the SCC. Whatever your connection to the transgender community—whether you are transsexual, a cross dresser or in between; a spouse, a partner or a family member; straight, gay, bi or omni-sexual; post-op, pre-op or non-op; young or old; married or single; FtM or MtF—if transgender is an issue in your life, you are welcome!
…The topics include basic information for the newbie, the newly-out, as well as the fully transitioned. They include detailed legal, medical and political presentations; and informative sessions on family relationships, sexuality and spirituality, and tips on makeup, presenting, and many more.
