Thanks for clearing that up, Saxby. Georgia’s senior senator, Saxby Chambliss, explained his opposition to gay marriage in one of the most offensively stupid ways possible. Then again, it’s about what you’d expect from the retiring conservative.
When asked by Politico if his views on gay marriage were changing the wake of Sen. Rob Portman’s recent evolution—or growing support in public opinion polls—Chambliss offered a quick retort.
“I’m not gay. So I’m not going to marry one.”
But this is also from the same senator who recently backed the federal Defense of Marriage Act, opposed the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” tried to explain away gay death threats from a staffer as free speech and scored 15 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s recent Congressional Scorecard.
The best tweet in reaction to the Chambliss declaration? From the AJC.
Chambliss, afraid of a more conservative primary opponent in 2014, isn’t running for re-election. Which should be heartening to progressives in Georgia. Except the cat fight to replace him is likely to produce an even more conservative candidate.
To recap: Saxby Chambliss is not gay. Not not gay like Hugh Jackman and Rodney Harris. Really not gay.
UPDATE: And now there’s a Tumblr site to appropriately mock Chambliss.
