Yvette Flunder to keynote Black Pride summit

imageA third-generation preacher who founded a United Church of Christ congregation in San Francisco will keynote the 3rd Annual State of Black Gay America Summit during Black Gay Pride in Atlanta next weekend.

Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, the senior pastor and founder of City of Refuge United Church of Christ, headlines the day-long series of speakers and panel discussions. The summit brings together local and national leaders to discuss critical economic, social and political issues facing gay African-Americans and comes during the six-day pride celebration that draws tens of thousands of people to Atlanta each Labor Day weekend.

Indie rockers Doubting Thomas to play Pride

imageThe entertainment line-up for the Atlanta Pride Festival in late October continues to take shape, with the latest addition coming from just a few hours north on Interstate 85.

Indy rock group Doubting Thomas is now among the performers for Pride, joining previously announced acts that include Josh Zuckerman, Eric Himan & The Adams, Halcyon and Goddess & She. Festival organizers announced the addition of Doubting Thomas on Monday, though a full schedule of who performs when during the 3-day event is still being pieced together.

Pride entertainers, events taking shape

imageFrom the staples you expect -- Starlight Cabaret, Commitment Ceremony, parade, Dyke March -- to a few new events, the Atlanta Pride Festival is taking shape.

With 12 weeks before the weekend unfolds, organizers on Friday confirmed that some of the festival's signature events are again in place, while also announcing a handful of entertainers now scheduled to perform. There are also events leading up to Pride, which is set for Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

So far, the entertainment lineup for Pride includes Josh Zuckerman (photo), Eric Himan & The Adams, Halcyon and Goddess & She. There's also a YouthPride entertainment block on Nov. 1.

Atlanta Pride announces opening night event

imageWith the successful Stonewall Week behind them, the Atlanta Pride Committee is shifting its focus to the main event -- Pride set for Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 in Piedmont Park.

Organizers announced early Tuesday that the two-day festival will open with the Official Pride Kickoff Party at the Georgia Aquarium on Oct. 30. The four-hour event includes DJ Martin Fry and special after-hour viewings at the aquarium with the Pride Committee benefiting from a portion of the $20 tickets to the event.

Stonewall: 1 gay thing to do today

imageWednesday features just one event under the official Stonewall Week banner from the Atlanta Pride Committee, but it's an interesting one:

Author Neil White appears at Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse to read from and discuss his moving memoir "In the Sanctuary of Outcasts." The work chronicles his years in federal prison.

Well, maybe that's not quite right. How about this: Let the festivities begin!

Stonewall Week -- a collection of about two-dozen events loosely affiliated with the Atlanta Pride Committee and scores of others -- kicked off last weekend and gets into full swing later this week.
