Time.com has boldly proclaimed Indianapolis, Ind., the Most Sexually Satisfied City in the U.S. A survey conducted by Men’s Health magazine used condom sales, birth rate and sex toy sales to determine the cities with the most sexually content populations.
There was no mention of the hetero-homo make up of survey participants, but high condom and sex toy sales among LGBT populations undoubtedly affected the results.
Six of the Top 10 most sexually satisfied cities are in the Midwest. Indianapolis condom sales rank 16th in the nation, according to a Nielsen survey. Yes, the Indianapolis 500 pumps up the numbers once a year.
What’s the deal with the Midwest? Could gay Indianapolis (photo) be the next hip LGBT vacation destination? This is the second time Indianapolis has been honored with the distinction. Is there something I am missing when I don’t suggest the Midwest to my U.S. travel clients?
There is a large bear population that loves fast cars. So much for coastal hot spots L.A., New York, and Miami. Ellen’s town Chicago barely ranks 10th.
Indianapolis is also included in the Most Underrated Gay Friendly Cities in America by gay travel expert Andrew Collins of About.com. It is America’s 13th largest city. OK – let’s go.
Fly into the Indianapolis International Airport (code: IND) for around $150, and take the airport shuttle service or a taxi to downtown. If you have the time, take Amtrack from Atlanta through the beautiful Virgina countryside for $184.
Forget the fact that the Advocate ranked Atlanta the gayest city in the U.S. It can’t compete with Indianapolis’s bathhouses. Their modern and immaculate 24-hour, fully equipped gym-sauna-tanning room-pool playgrounds will surely help boost the ranking of this satisfied Midwest city.
The Advocate claims Iowa City, home of “Brokeback Mountain,” has “more gays per capita than the major metropolises” and ranks it No. 3 on their Gayest Cities in the US list. Bloomington, Ind., called “a magnet city for gays in the Grain Belt” came in No. 4. The headquarters of the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington gives the entire town that flair of “heteroflexibility”.
The other cities on the Sexually Satisfied list are, in order, Columbus, Ohio; Ft Wayne, Ind.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Antonio, Tex.; Denver, Colo.; Austin, Tex., Boise City, Idaho, and at No. 10 – Chicago.
Something more about Sexually Satisfied No. 2: Columbus, Ohio’s Pride celebration in June gets a boost from its lively downtown neighborhoods like the gay-popular Short North and German Village areas. Columbus also has one of the Midwest’s best culinary reputations, a large number of art galleries, numerous gay sports clubs, and a youthful but unpretentious gay club scene.
