Now that school’s out for summer break, a large chunk of Athens’ gay community has returned to their other homes for the summer. But the residents and the die hards have hung around for what promises to be some hot summer days.
Contrary to some popular belief, gay life in Athens does extend far beyond the cute, young twinks that roam around campus, sometimes caught jogging shirtless. Rather, there is quite a thriving group of more, shall I say, mature men and Athens residents that are at the foundation of all things gay in Athens. And they’ll be around all summer.
Dig in with Athens Casuals, one of Athens’ revered gay men’s dinner clubs. The gents meet weekly at an Athens restaurant or at a member’s home for some tasty times with each other.
If shaking your groove thing with Athens’ hottest suits your fancy, be sure to hit up Go Bar on May 16 at 10 p.m. for a pan-queer dance party. DJ Mahogany will be spinning some fine 70s and 80s beats. With no cover charge, there’s no excuse not to come.
On May 31, ATHICA, a contemporary art gallery in downtown Athens, will feature the closing events for “Crafting Romance.” The show will include a couple of pieces by gay artists and I will be speaking about romance and relationships within the gay community and how they’re under attack.
