Ten teams from the Hotlanta Softball League are competing in the Gay Softball World Series, which opened play Tuesday in Seattle. Art Davenport (photo), HSL’s Open Division secretary, will be providing posts throughout the Series.
Thursday wasn’t the stellar day that we might have hoped for, but ATL’s teams are still in it to win it.
The Venom lost their first tournament game (vs. the Phoenix Toros) and will start their climb up the loser’s bracket on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against the DC Metz. The Mudcats started out with a 18-13 win over the Houston Force, but then lost to a nail-biter to the LA Vipers, so they will play again on Friday at 5:45 p.m. and looking at the brackets, there’s a good chance it could be against the Venom!
The Sluggers started off strong with two wins, but in their third game (vs. Houston Hellcats), they fell a little short, so they now play on Friday at 3:35 p.m.
The Arsenal won their first game, but lost the second, so now they start again with a 1:25 p.m. game on Friday. With a loss in their first match-up against Tampa Fusion, the Packers now face the Kansas City Trouble on Friday at 9:05 a.m.
Both of ATL’s D teams are going strong, but I do not have the results of their last games. And for some reason, I don’t think either teams would appreciate a call from me at 4 a.m. (Update: The Steel team had it’s first loss last night, but the Muddawags are still undefeated.)
On a more serious note, I hear that there were a lot of protests in the D Division on Thursday and ATL faced it’s first when the Tampa Brigade challenged two Steel players (both pick-ups from the Yellow Jackets). While one was cleared, the other was rerated as an 11 and ejected from the game and series. Since this did not raise the team’s rating over the D Division cap, the Steel kept that win and continued on to their next game.

Friday will be another long day of games in all divisions and tonight is the big RPlace block party—all building up to Saturday’s championship games.
Now, it’s time for me to find some coffee. I wonder if there’s a Starbucks around?
