That deafening silence isn’t just the wind sweeping winter across gay Atlanta. A soft hush happens each year when lesbian DJ Vicki Powell and her gigs go on holiday hiatus after a huge weekend of last blasts.
The waiting for Powell’s return begins now after a packed Sister Louisa’s Church on Sunday. Back in April, her monthly Sunday Service at the gay-owned alterna-queer bar sprouted through the spring thaw to a rave welcome. Perhaps knowing it was their last chance for 2013, the ping-pong room thumped extra hard.
For her part, Powell pulled double duty on Sunday. She headlined the big gay Toy Party (view photos) before a quick wardrobe change on her way to the Church gig. Before she arrived, friend and fellow gay DJ Martin Fry helmed the tables and fired up the crowd. Powell's unofficial hibernation sees a respite on Dec. 13 for Queers! Punks! DJs! Ria Riot at Variety Playhouse. She's one of several spinmeisters on tap to remember lesbian Atlanta chef Ria Pell.
