Atlanta woman: Delta employee scrawled ‘sodomite’ on luggage

A straight Atlanta woman claims that a Delta employee wrote an anti-LGBTQ slur on her rainbow-colored luggage tag.

Renee Gerrish highlighted the incident in a social media post on Sept. 12. She discovered the defaced tag after landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on a flight from Boston.

“Someone at Delta Air Lines baggage handling took it upon themselves to write ‘sodomite’ on my luggage tag,” she wrote. “Bigotry, hate speech and destruction of personal property while in @Delta  airline’s care. I want this shared and on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community — I will not go quietly.”

It’s been retweeted nearly 3,000 times since then.

“I wear LGBTQ+ support clothing and accessories regularly,” Gerrish told LGBTQ Nation on Sept. 13. “As a girl, I love rainbows, but as a symbol of love and support for the community that means everything to me. I don’t care if someone thinks I’m gay because of choices in rainbow accessories, good for them if the do.”

Gerrish was frustrated about not receiving an immediate response from Delta. But on Sept. 17, she wrote on Twitter that a customer service representative apologized for the incident and said that they are “fully investigating” it. Gerrish added that she will reach out to TSA about the incident.
