Atlanta to install rainbow crosswalks this weekend

Rainbow crosswalks will be installed in the heart of gay Atlanta this weekend, prompting the closure of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue while crews put paint to asphalt.

But city officials caution that the installation – which would come ahead of the Peachtree Road Race on Tuesday – is weather permitting. If rain happens this weekend, the crosswalks won't.

The city issued a travel advisory Thursday cautioning that the intersection – long considered the heart of gay Atlanta – will be closed beginning at 5 a.m. on Saturday. Plans call for it to be re-opened by 5 a.m. on Monday. Again, that's weather permitting.

On Tuesday, thousands of participants in the road race would jog over the new crosswalks as the route heads to its end at Piedmont Park.

In June, Mayor Kasim Reed announced that the city would permanently install rainbow crosswalks at the intersection. In 2015, rainbow crosswalks were added to the intersection during Atlanta Pride.
