Religious bigots in metro Atlanta churches, afraid gay Boy Scouts will run amok over straight ones, are booting their troops. And members of one Marietta congregation gave their pastor a standing O when he did.
Let that sink in. A standing ovation. For kicking out the Boy Scouts. Then consider what else Roswell Street Baptist Church Senior Pastor Ernest Easley had to say above:
"You've got boys in there in a tent that are sexually attractive to other boys, whose hormones are going off the wall. Something is going to happen," Easley said.
Ah, yes. That well-worn scare tactic from the bigots: Horny gays can't control themselves and will rape and pillage unsuspecting straight guys. It's not the first time Easley has employed the tactic. That so happened when "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was repealed allowing gays to serve openly in the military.
Expect more of this in Atlanta churches. (We're looking at you, Rev. Randy Mickler and Scoutmaster Luke Vancleave.) Scouting officials say about 5 percent of churches in metro Atlanta have dumped their troops since the May 23 vote to allow open gay members.
Thankfully, there's Rev. Richard Burdick and his Unity North Atlanta Church, also in Marietta. They're offering meeting space for Troop 204, away from Easley's bigotry.
