Open up the trophy case, Atlanta. The city that regularly scores top honors in all sorts of Best in Gay listicles has nailed another. A new ranking names Atlanta as the top destination for LGBT travel.

Travel planning site Gogobot culled its database of more than 60,000 locations, checked the number of reviews from travelers visiting the destinations and reviewed where people on the site were traveling to most and came up with its 2016 LGBT Travelers Rising Stars Destinations. Atop the list at No. 1? Atlanta.

No other city symbolizes the New South quite like Atlanta...but You might be surprised to know that Atlanta was also named America's 'Gayest City' way back in 2010 by the Advocate. Blending the traditions of the Old South with American innovation like no other city in the country, six years later ATL is on the rise as an LGBT destination with bars, clubs, and a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Simply put Atlanta transcends those tired and typical travel spots. Via Travel + Leisure:

"Gogobot's LGBT Tribe is exploring exciting new spots that transcend traditional LGBT travel destinations like Miami, San Francisco, and Provincetown,” Krista Canfield, Gogobot’s Getaway Expert told Travel + Leisure via email. “Sadly over the past year Gogobot has had to issue disclaimers here in the U.S. about travel safety related to discrimination and anti-LGBT legislation. On the flip side, we're excited this year to be able to celebrate cities like Atlanta, Minneapolis and Tampa where there are many restaurants, nightclubs, and neighborhoods that are LGBT friendly and a number of organizations that help support and promote those businesses' growth and success.”

Gogobot noted that thanks to anti-gay legislation in places including North Carolina and Mississippi, travel to some U.S. spots isn't all that LGBT friendly. Thankfully, Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed an anti-gay "religious freedom" bill in March that was feeding a backlash that threatened the state's economy and hospitalist industry. And the city's third-consecutive perfect score on HRC's Municipal Equality Index couldn't have hurt. Maybe it's all the shirtless hunks and topless lesbians.

Gay Atlanta is accustomed to topping Best Of lists. We're not as handsome or as best dressed as we'd like, but there's some of the Best Gay Bars in the World, the queer factor is high and the city offers all those twinks a seemingly endless supply of sugar daddies. The nerds love us and so do the pollsters. Maybe that's because when the lights go out, gay Atlanta loves its porn and kink, too.
