YouthPride heads uptown for fundraiser

imageThe Bill Lowe Gallery in Buckhead provided a posh setting for the annual YouthPride Evolve fundraiser on Friday.

The event benefits YouthPride's suicide prevention program for LGBT youth. Evolve expanded its offerings last year, adding individual, couples and group counseling at no cost for LGBT teens and youth.

For the Kid in All of Us, the charitable group behind Backpack in the Park and Toy Party, brought together its patrons and sponsors last night for a mixer and mini-fashion show. Saks Fifth Avenue hosted the event in the men's department of its Phipps Plaza store, offering a fashionable setting for the five models working the makeshift runway with new offerings from the upscale clothier.

Exercise as a way to drop that blood pressure

If you’re concerned with your blood pressure, the first thing to do is consult with your doctor and listen to the advice dished out.

Most likely, you’ll be told to make some lifestyle changes such as eating a more nutritious diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits and grains while reducing fatty, high sodium and processed foods. Another recommendation will undoubtedly be to participate in a regular exercise program that could include walking or cycling.

Stadtlander drops out of District 6 race

imageCharlie Stadtlander, one of three gay candidates vying for the District 6 post on the Atlanta City Council, has apparently dropped out of the race.

The DeKalb County school teacher withdrew from the race after Steve Brodie announced his campaign Thursday morning. Stadtlander tells Southern Voice he always intended to drop out if Brodie entered the race, though Stadtander never said so publicly when he announced his campaign in early January.

Third gay candidate enters City Council race

imageThe race for the District 6 post on the Atlanta City Council – often regarded as the gay seat on the council for more than a decade – just got a little more competitive and a lot more gay.

Steve Brodie, a gay man who lost a 2005 campaign for the seat by a razor-thin margin of five votes, announced Thursday that he will try for a second time to unseat incumbent Anne Fauver.

Apparently, you can’t keep a good ‘ho down

We always enjoy when local gay establishments get a little recognition from the national gay press.

Take the Advocate, for example. The gay glossy weighed in recently with its list of "Top 10 Gay C&W Bars" in the country.

The geographically-diverse list stops in Dallas, Oklahoma City, Denver, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Chicago and Tampa.

It also had this to say about a place right here in Atlanta, which landed as the No. Two best country and western gay bar in the U.S.

imageBeer pong and lesbians seem to be a touchy subject for some at Agnes Scott College.

The all-women school in Decatur is often the punchline for jokes that have to do with lesbians. It's something the campus confronted late last year when student Louisa Hill (photo) complained in a blog about Agnes Scott becoming "the cesspool for Hollywood's C-list sequels." Hill and other students were upset when the filming of "Road Trip II: Beer Pong" came to campus.
