Drag queen performs in blackface, wins Douglasville show

A drag queen apparently performed a number in blackface and another performer allegedly uttered a racial slur during a show Saturday in Douglasville.

The incidents took place at Irish Bred Pub & Restaurant, according to a Facebook post on Sunday by performer Bryan Timbs.

Drag performer Robyn Springs (top photo left) performed Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” in blackface while wearing an afro wig, according to Timbs (photos below). Springs won the competition, Timbs said.

The show host disputed that the performer was in blackface. But several people who said they attended the show backed up Timbs' claims on Facebook.

“It doesn’t matter how new she is, it doesn’t matter what her skill set is, it’s 2019 and she definitely knew better,” Timbs wrote.

Timbs said Robyn Springs’ drag mother, Sandy Springs, also used a racial slur in a conversation with Timbs and another performer.

Another performer, Saraya Sis, posted a comment that Sandy Springs made on Facebook regarding the incidents.

“Well I’m not perfect. Sorry your friend didn’t win,” Sandy Springs wrote. “You wasn’t there and the crowd wash [sic] screaming her name. Obviously you don’t know what blackface is. Look it up and stop slandering my name all because your friend didn’t win.”

Amber Divine, who runs a Thursday night drag show at Irish Bred Pub called Divine’s Faces, kicked Sandy Springs out of the show’s lineup in the wake of the controversy. Promoter Ron Scoza announced he's also cutting ties with the Douglasville pub.

“I also want to deeply apologize to the fans of the Divine Faces show if this has caused any in undue stress of any kind,” Divine wrote Monday on Facebook. “I have always champion [sic] the cause against racism and have treated everyone with kindness and respect.”

Divine provided a phone number to reach her, but calls went to an unrelated business.

Robyn Springs did not respond to Project Q’s message about the incidents. We left a phone message for the manager of Irish Bred Pub & Restaurant. Efforts to reach Sandy Springs and Bryan Timbs were also unsuccessful.
