Pride tempts PETA to protest kickoff party again

The Georgia Aquarium will once again be awash in rainbow, PETA protests be damned, as Atlanta Pride returns to the massive water tank to open the festival with its popular VIP reception and kickoff party on Oct. 10.

Pride announced its return to the venue in downtown Atlanta on Thursday. Gay dolphins, and their supportive friends, are encouraged. PETA, Tim Gunn and Jane Lynch? Not so much.

“Once again, our colleagues and friends at the Georgia Aquarium have worked most of the year to create new and exciting ideas to knock everyone’s socks off at the Official Kick Off Party,” Pride Executive Director Buck Cooke says in a prepared statement.

The masive kickoff party draws thousands of revelers to the Aquarium, ready to open a weekend of Pride fun and toast a few dignitaries. And see Tyler Perry in drag.

But PETA has worked and whined to make the event controversial, complaining that all those gay boys in tank tops are too much for the dolphins, whales and other captive wildlife at the facility. DJs Edil Hernandez and Diablo Rojo, please keep that in mind as you spin this time around.

PETA has even pulled fashion guru Tim Gunn and “Glee's” Jane Lynch into the fray.

Atlanta Pride Executive Director, Buck Cooke, stated, “Once again, our colleagues and friends at the Georgia Aquarium have worked most of the year to create new and exciting ideas to knock everyone’s socks off at the Official Kick Off Party!”

Cooke continued, “One of my favorite things about the Official Kick Off Party is watching all parts of our LGBTQ community come together in a beautiful venue to enjoy good music, fun company, and world-renowned exhibits as we all prepare for the festival to begin the next morning.  All of us at Atlanta Pride are so appreciative to the Georgia Aquarium and their talented staff for hosting our Official Kick Off Party again this year.”

As always, the Aquarium team has lined up an impressive offering of entertainment for attendees, including DJ Edil Hernandez, one of the hottest DJ’s on the scene today.  DJ, Diablo Rojo, a fan favorite for over a decade here in Atlanta will also be featuring his signature “visual” sound throughout what is sure to be a memorable evening!

Cooke offered this important note about the event, “We tell everyone that the party will sell out each year and every year, people beg us to get tickets after they are all gone.  Even if you think you might want to come, buy your tickets now because if you wait too long, you will miss out on one of the best parties in the southeastern US.”
