The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s Atlanta Leadership Council welcomed the sun and warm temperatures with Saturday’s Thank GLAAD It’s Spring mixer at The Nook.

The hotspot in Piedmont Park served as the perfect place to raise funds and awareness for the LGBT media watchdog group as it introduced its new “Filtering Out Inequality” initiative. The Atlanta arm of the group joins volunteer GLAAD Leadership Councils in cities across the country that provide on-the-ground local support with events and with monitoring response to local media coverage of LGBT issues and people.

GLAAD raised eyebrows when the Atlanta Journal Constitution was nominated for this year’s GLAAD Media Award for its LGBT coverage, which ignored Atlanta Pride and local HIV issues and went against GLAAD’s own guidelines in the story of a cross-dressing purse-snatcher.

GLAAD defended the nomination, and ultimately, the AJC did not win the award.

Thank GLAAD It’s Spring took on a festive atmosphere in the vein of the organization’s Thank GLAAD It’s Friday mixers, held most recently in October and November (view photos). More Thank GLAAD events are in the works for spring and summer.
