Atlanta extends bar hours by three hours for Pride Sunday

Atlanta is extending bar hours across the city on Sunday, which will help keep the last night of Pride weekend celebration going late.

Atlanta City Councilmembers Jennifer Ide, Amir Farokhi and Carla Smith sponsored the ordinance to move closing time from midnight to 3 a.m. on Pride Sunday into Monday. The City Council passed the measure 14-0 on Sept. 17. Councilmember Ivory Lee Young was absent.

The extended bar hours are an annual rite of passage. But word to the wise, last call is at 2:30 a.m.

In the past, the City Council has also honored Atlanta Pride with a resolution. While that wasn’t done this year, Ide was one of the elected officials who welcomed people to Pride with a letter in the annual Pride Guide.

“The Atlanta City Council commits its partnership in the march to secure equality for all of our brothers and sisters,” Ide wrote. “In this time when hard-earned rights seem to be at risk from our federal government, we recognize that we as the elected leaders of the City of Atlanta have a duty and the ability to create a safe place for the LGBTQIQA community within our boundaries.”

The Atlanta Pride Festival is Oct. 13-14 in Piedmont Park.
