Give the Atlanta Dream some credit. They know how to make a splash.
The WNBA’s newest addition unveiled its home and road uniforms on Thursday. And rather than hold a more traditional press event inside the (warm and dry) confines of Philips Arena, where the team opens its home schedule on May 23, they opted for the Varsity.
More accurately, an alley behind the famed Downtown restaurant. Why there? The reason for the site became clear pretty quickly – the team used the Olympic Flame Tower that sits there to attach two 36-foot banners featuring Ivory Latta and Katie Feenstra wearing the new uni’s. They wanted the thousands of commuters driving by on the Downtown Connector during rush hour this morning to take notice.
They also marched out team officials along with Latta and Feenstra, who is hard to miss. The team’s center is 6’8” and weighs in at 240 pounds.
The home uniform is white with sky blue piping, bright red stars on the sides and the blue and red Dream logo across the front. The road uni is sky blue with bright red piping, white stars on the sides and a white and red logo across the front.
Marynell Meadors, the team’s general manager and head coach, hinted at her expectations for the upcoming season.
“They are just dynamic young professional women that do a great job on the court,” Meadors said. “We take the best of the best [in the WNBA] and put them on our teams. There are 14 teams and we plan on being in the play-offs.”
The team holds open tryouts on April 15.
