The Atlanta Dream won its season opener on Saturday, downing Indiana 87-86 in a double-overtime thriller that included 22 ties and 14 lead changes.

The team, which enjoys a sizable lesbian following, says attendance topped 8,700 for the kick off of its second season.

image“It was a great game,” head coach Marynell Meadors says in a press release. “There was no quitting in this team tonight. They were on a mission and I thought they played well. There were time when we could have used two or three more preseason games. If we would have had those, I think we would have been a little smoother tonight.”

The Dream had two chances to seal the win at the end of the first overtime, but rookie Angel McCoughtry missed a jumper in the lane and Nikki Teasley’s three-point attempt fell short.

image“I don’t get butterflies,” McCoughtry says of her first game in the WNBA. “I just get in the groove and go with the team. I had butterflies on that free throw line though. I was tough when I missed those free throws in the end.”

On Sunday, the Dream dropped a road game to Washington, 77-71.

The Dream plays at home again June 19 against Washington.
