Atlanta civil rights icon: Gays ‘befuddle’ me

Civil rights icon Joseph Lowery is befuddled by that gay thing, but the Atlanta pastor stands firm in his support of LGBT equality even if he's a little mushy on whether he'd officiate a gay marriage.

Lowery reiterated his support for LGBT equality in an April 22 interview with CBS 46, hitting home a point he made in May 2012 shortly after President Obama came out for gay marriage: “Don't you have to believe in equal rights for all of God's children?”

But that doesn't mean Lowery grasps the finer points of being gay, he admits.

“I'm befuddled by the homosexual community and their thing, but I believe in equal rights,” Lowery told CBS 46. “If you believe in equal rights, you have to grant everybody equal rights.”

When it comes to gay marriage, Lowery punted years ago when a gay couple approached him and asked if he would preside over their wedding. He hesitated, the gay couple didn't follow up and Lowery breathed a sigh of relief.

But today? That might be a different story.

“I wasn't prepared to deal with it. I'd like to think that if I had followed through, I would have married them,” Lowery said.
