Armorettes must deep throat loss of Sofonda Cox

No one knows there’s a time for laughs and a time for tears better than gay Atlanta's own Armorettes. Now we learn that the 35th anniversary weekend shows will bring yet another goodbye from a popular member of the troupe.

We were already sad about Knomie Moore’s retirement after former and current members dole out HIV/AIDS earnings during anniversary weekend events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Now we’ll all have to swallow the loss of Sofonda Cox as well. And just as Knomie can tip back a whole beverage, Sofonda has a signature party trick of her very own etched in Armorettes lore.

For seven years, no other Armorette has lived up to her name quite so literally as Sofonda Cox. The character’s obsession – and her creator J. Smith's remarkable talent for showing that appreciation – often comes in her signature number, “The Penis Song.” Cameron Diaz & Co. do it up in the movie “The Sweetest Thing,” but not as memorably as Sofonda taking it to the next level while taking an entire 14- to 17-inch dildo ("depending on the night," she tells us) down her throat. Apparently, it is not in fact “too big to fit in there” (top photo).

No matter how many times you see it, it’s amazing. So is her eye makeup that colors way outside the lines and meanders across her whole face. So is her dedication to the ongoing HIV/AIDS cause. We’ve seen all of it worked for love, laughs and charity at more events than we can count. Here’s our tribute of just a few shining Sofonda moments, followed by the full text of her fondest farewell.

Now where is that dildo?

I know it’s in here somewhere…

There it is!

Everyone loves a girl who knows what she wants.

And we do mean everyone.

She is so fonda Pride. All the holidays really.

Like Christmas.

And Easter.

She lives to serve.

And be served.

And she’s so reverent, y’all.

But let's not get crazy. We'll miss you, girl!

The last word.

Sofonda Cox's fond farewell:

"The last 7 years as an Armorette have been an amazing time for me. I have met so many loving and caring people who have become great friends, even family! The selflessness of any individual who is or has ever been an Armorette is astonishing. And the support of the community and fans is amazing.

As I leave this group, I am only stepping out of the spotlight because I know the group and cause is in great hands. I am sad to be leaving, but excited to focus on some possible life changes that would not allow me to continue on with the level of dedication I feel this group deserves. I will still be around helping and supporting the Armorettes as long as this group is around and needed!

To the Armorettes that I have come to love as sisters and brothers, keep up the GREAT work and never hesitate to call if you need my help! To the fans, PLEASE continue to support this worthy group of hard working, caring individuals! The AIDS epidemic is still relevant today, and our community needs to embrace those individuals affected by HIV/AIDS and support the charities that provide such valuable lifelines to these individuals."
