Two armed robbers ambushed a patron outside a gay-owned gym in Midtown early Tuesday, stealing a backpack and electronics worth thousands of dollars.

Gravity Fitness, which is located on Faulkner Road just off Cheshire Bridge, was briefly locked down as the victim and gym employees waited for Atlanta police to arrive after the incident about 6 a.m.

As the 47-year-old woman walked across the parking lot outside the gym, a man armed with a handgun ran up to her and demanded money, according to an Atlanta police incident report.

“He yelled give me your money, give me your money,” the incident report states.

As the woman handed the suspect her green backpack, another armed man approached her. She then fled inside the gym, according to the incident report.

The woman was apparently not injured during the robbery.

A car parked outside the gym was also broken into Tuesday morning. The suspects stole about $3,900 in items and electronics between the two incidents, including the backpack, car keys, several credit cards, an iPhone 6 and an Apple laptop computer, police said.

Police hope that security cameras outside the gym captured the incident and will help their investigation. A Gravity co-owner said that the security cameras are one of several safety measures in place.

“We do everything we can for the safety of our members,” gym co-owner Michael Yadach said. “We are working with law enforcement with our security cameras.”

Yaddach said the gym also informed the landlord to the property, which includes a handful of other of LGBT businesses – popular dance club Jungle and gay sex clubs Manifest 4U and Club Eros.

“It's a sign of the times. Everybody, regardless of where they are, has to be vigilant,” Yadach said.

After the robbery, the gym warned its patrons against leaving items of value in their vehicles.

TO ALL MEMBERS: PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN YOUR VEHICLES. IF YOU NEED A PLACE TO STORE YOUR THINGS, PLEASE USE OUR LOCKERS OR ASK A DESK PERSON TO HELP YOU. THANK YOU.

Yadach said the gym has a long-standing policy of escorting patrons to their vehicles if they ask for assistance.

The robbery is one of a several recent incidents in Midtown involving gay crime victims or gay-owned businesses. On July 14, a burglar stole several laptops from the Myrtle Street home of Will Pollock as he slept upstairs. A day later, two armed men robbed Matthew Jones as he stood just feet from the front door to his apartment on 8th Street. The robbers returned later to steal Jones' vehicle. On June 9, Mamdouh Shawky and Cory Fain were robbed and pistol-whipped in Midtown. The men were walking from Caribou Coffee on Piedmont Avenue to the Eagle.

Atlanta police have said they are responding with increased patrols. The Midtown Ponce Security Alliance is also beefing up its patrols from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to Fox 5. But that doesn't always end well.
