AIDS Walk Houston raises thousands to fight HIV

Never mind chilly temperatures and that rain. AIDS Walk Houston participants grabbed their colorful umbrellas and did what they planned to do on Sunday: Walk and raise big bucks for HIV charities.

Last year, the event raised more than $600,000. Organizers told Outsmart ahead of the walk that they hoped to match that total again this year. A fundraising tracker on the event's website put the tally at more than $446,000 raised, though a final number wasn't available Monday.

The 3.1-mile walk in Sam Houston Park included Mayor Annise Parker and special performances by Punch Bowl, the Truth Project and radio personality JJ from 97.9 The Box.

The event benefits AIDS Foundation Houston and 10 other agencies, including Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic, Bering Omega Community Services, Brentwood Community Foundation, Change Happens, Crisis Intervention of Houston, Fundación Latinoamericana de Acción Social, Lazarus House: A Center for Wellness, LIVE Consortium, Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church and Spay-Neuter Assistance Program.

The weather stunk, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the thousands of expected participants.
