Thousands of people took part in the 28th Annual AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run on Sunday to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for AID Atlanta and 10 other local non-profits battling HIV.
The day included a 5K run, opening ceremonies, the AIDS Walk and a post-walk concert. Panels from the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt were displayed in the meadow at the Piedmont Park event.
An online tally on Monday showed that the walk has raised about $480,000 of its $750,000 goal. The fundraiser will go on through Nov. 30.
The top fundraising teams were Positive Impact Health Centers ($32,000), AID Atlanta ($25,000) and Jerusalem House ($25,000). The top fundraising individuals were Edie Cheezburger ($14,000), Christopher Evans ($11,000) and Joel Black ($6,000).
Erick White placed first in the 5K run with a time of 17:40, at least the fourth consecutive year he’s won the race. White also won the 28th Annual Atlanta Pride Run & Walk in June.
