Organizers of the AIDS Vaccine 200 – pardon the pun – geared up for their 200-mile fundraiser in May with a six-hour cycling event on Sunday.

The afternoon of sitting-still cardio, dubbed Spin to End (AIDS) 2011, took place at Emory with about 40 participants. The event helped raise nearly $6,000 for Action Cycling Atlanta, the group that stages the AV200 each May. The funds will go to offset the cost of that two-day event so funds raised during it can all benefit the Emory Vaccine Center.

imageLast year, some 130 riders helped the AV200 raise a record $198,200 that benefitted the vaccine center, Jerusalem House and Positive Impact.

This year, the event is set for May 14-15. Ambitious organizers are hinting that they hope to raise more than $200,000. Since Action Cycling created the ride in 2003, it has raised about $765,000 for the vaccine center.

During Spin to End on Sunday, participants worked in teams of up to six members and each rider raised at least $100.

“Spin to End is a pre-cursor event to May’s AV200,” Leon Morales, co-ride director for the AV200, said ahead of the event. “It’s another way for Action Cycling to raise much-needed funds for vaccine research, but also a way to shine even more light on our larger event in May.”
