If you’ve been part of gay Atlanta long enough to blink, you’re probably familiar with the one and only Bubba D. Licious. Or you live under a rock. Well, hold onto your 10-foot strand of pearls, kids. She swings into celebrating 25 years this weekend.
It may be hard to believe that it was 1989 when Armory softball team member Jim Marks stepped up on a lark to become one of the Armorettes. But just as she and the rest of the troupe nurse hangovers from turning 35 (photos), Saturday marks Marks’ own 57th birthday as well as Bubba Dee’s birthday, observed.
From the face of Hotlanta River Expo in the ‘90s and 2000s, to her signature station at the helm of the monthly PALS Bingo, to her newest gig doing brunch at Lips Cabaret and way, way, way beyond, just try to swallow that it’s been 25 years since that first audition laid this groundwork to become a local legend.
While you get used to the time passing, take a look back at just a few treasured memories honoring gay Atlanta’s favorite charity hostess with the mostest.
Let’s start with a taste. Or a guzzle. Bubba usually does. Atta girl.
Ouch. Watch the teeth!
She’s the co-hostess with repartee for the par-tay, OK?
Playing well with others is kind of her thing.
From the famous.
To the infamous.
Even the infamous dressed as the famous.
She’s not afraid to squeeze the locals.
And into other tight places.
Let it be known Bubba can hang with her girls.
While keeping up with the boys.
And the lady boys.
Pretty much anybody, no matter what team they bat for.
But be careful. She just might judge you.
Bubba is down with Pets Are Loving Support.
She loves pups so much, it’s like Dorothy with Toto. Literally.
While you’re clutching your pearls, she’s swinging hers.
It’s a party trick that’s extra, extra long on tradition.
She’s all about a theme.
And a hat.
And stuff on her face.
Mostly, Bubba’s got Pride. And ATL is proud to call her our own.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Cheers, girl!
