23 gay ways Cinco de Mayo lasts all weekend

For years, the place to do Cinco de Mayo if you’re gay in Atlanta is Las Margaritas. Duh. But what to do when the holi-gay falls on Monday? Another no-brainer. Stretch it into four days of fun, naturally.

Fiesta Papi Oscar Valdivieso does just that beginning Friday. His popular Mexican restaurant is gay party central again this year, but Valdivieso and his mama give it an extra shot of party juice with DJs, giveaways, drinks, drag, food and a new name to cover all that fabulosity. The Cinco De Mayo Outdoor Music Fest goes hard each night through Monday, including an all-day, brunch-to-late night event on Sunday.

Speaking of extra shots of party juice, count on the Jose Cuervo shots, “Kick Ass ‘Ritas” and other drink specials to flow in honor of Mexican Independence Day. And your liver. Honor your liver, girl with a crazy good time each day leading up to Monday’s main event madness starting at 5 p.m.

That’s when Miss Sofia takes the stage to emcee the talents of four local drag favorites: Phoenix, Mariah Balenciaga, Violet Chachki and Allysa Brooks. What do you mean, “What else?” Well since you asked, three DJs – Sean Mac, Karlitos and Harold G. – pump the beats on Monday. More? All that partying benefits AIDS Walk’s hot, sexy Ready 4 Hope team and CHRIS Kids.

Trust us. You’ll be sated. So what can you do to be ready? Check in with our checklist of must-haves for a gay Cinco de Mayo in Atlanta below. We do it by way of our favorite visions from years past. You can also view our full galleries from 2013, 201220112010 and 2009.

First, you might need some balloon animals.

And maybe some nipple protectors.

Of course, beer is good.

Margaritas are better.

Especially in a fishbowl.

Shots are best.

But pace yourself.

Oh, fine. Go hog wild.

Get festive with face paint.

Grab your sombrero.

And your tank top.

Work a pirate look? Sure.

Put on some short shorts.

Cover your lady parts.

Or not.

Because Oscar and mama will be there.

And DJ Karlitos.

And 'Papi' is sure to love on his queens.

Be sure to smile for our photographer.

Hey girl, face forward.

Because here's looking at you. Cheers, queers!
