With the Boys Scouts set to vote on ending its ban on gay members this week, the kooks are coming out to oppose gay Scouts. Thankfully, 11Alive found two smart Atlanta gays to debate them.
Buck Cooke, Atlanta Pride's executive director, and Linda Ellis, executive director of the Health Initiative, helped counter the Biblical argument of Scoutmaster Luke Vancleave and Scout mother Lauri Weatherly, who seems quite preoccupied with practicing gays practicing homosexual something or other.
It's not like we haven't been here before. In February, when the Scouts considered lifting its ban on gays, WSB provided a platform for Rev. Randy Mickler to spew some offensive blather about gays molesting boys to argue against gay Scouts. But the report offered no retort to Mickler's anti-gay rhetoric.
Not so with 11Alive's story on Friday. But the station has plenty of practice balancing out their reports on those pesky practicing gays. They've hosted a mini-debate over Chick-fil-A with gay attorney Randy New, talked gay marriage with Georgia Equality's Jeff Graham and Georgia Voice Editor Laura Douglas-Brown, and tapped Project Q's Matt Hennie to discuss Anderson Cooper's coming out.
