11Alive finds an Atlanta gay to debate Chick-fil-A

The tasty battle that erupted when Chick-fil-A said it doesn’t like the gays and their same-sex marriage found its way onto 11Alive on Thursday as the station hosted a mini-debate between a smart gay and a Republican lawmaker who likes his anti-gay waffle fries. Squaring off between questions from veteran journalist Jeff Hullinger was state Sen. John Albers, a Republican who represents portions of north Fulton, and gay attorney Randy New. New isn’t shy about dipping his toes into political waters, hosting benefits for HIV non-profits and supporting efforts to end the military’s ban on gay soldiers. Not surprisingly, Albers applauded Chick-fil-A and attempted to dismiss gay marriage with a muddy comparison to one of the chain’s fried chicken sandwiches. (He backed them again Friday in an op-ed on Patch.) 11Alive delves into gay issues with regularity, sometimes even finding smart gay people to discuss same-sex marriage and Anderson Cooper’s coming out. They’ve hosted a wedding contest won by the gays and let gay Atlanta restaurateur Frank Bragg tap his inner Rachael Ray on air. They also make Karen Handel, already one of Georgia’s wingnut conservatives, even testier.
