Transgender metro Atlanta teen named homecoming queen

Students at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming voted transgender teenager Charlie Baum as their homecoming queen on Jan. 26.

Baum (top photo, right), a 17-year-old senior, celebrated the news on Instagram.

“This year, harassment and just straight up bullying I’ve dealt with have … disparaged me from really enjoying myself at school and my senior year, but this win, to me, represents a more progressive and accepting future in one of the most conservative and backwards counties in Georgia,” she wrote.

Baum told Pink News that it was a long way from when she started the school year last fall.

This year, in particular, I spent the first semester not out as trans but instead going to school regularly with crazy dramatic makeup,” she said. “This angered plenty of people, some to the point of harassment.”

Baum created her Instagram account last June and came out as trans in a post in December.

“Most of you know this, so I suppose this is my official ‘coming out’ post … but I’ve always, always known that I was a girl and it’s been something I’ve been very ashamed, scared and hesitant to talk about/be open about, but I’ve never felt more like myself,” she wrote.

“It is so incredibly freeing to finally be myself and present myself the way I have always known myself! And I’m very excited for 2019,” she added.

Baum told Pink News that her friends nominated her for homecoming court and started spreading the word.

They had seen me have a rough year with a lot of students and they were also aware that for a trans girl to be nominated and possibly win in this county is not just surprising but also historic.”

“Once I was eligible, I was hellbent on taking the crown, not just cause I like looking pretty, but also for the LGBT community,” she added.
