Get ready, Atlanta. A cabaret is coming to Midtown, and Ten is set to undergo a magical transformation for the occasion. For one night only, the bar turns into an intimate cabaret club setting for LGBTQ Atlanta’s own Matt Brooker’s official solo debut.
Martinis, Music & All That Jazz introduces the 24-year-old Jazz vocalist in two sets on Wednesday, May 23. Atlanta cabaret legend Marsha Dupree and a trio of Atlanta’s finest musicians will accompany him.
The idea of a cabaret night to spice up the regular schedule comes from the owner of Ten himself, James Nelson. He approached local Broadway veteran Robert Ray about who would be the best choice for the first foray, and Brooker was Ray’s first thought. The longtimer says that the newcomer has it all — looks, talent and one mighty voice.
Brooker was born to a family filled with musicians, including a professional jazz trombonist, professional choreographer and professional vocalist.
“My parents were and still are a great influence,” Brooker tells Project Q.
Performing in acapella groups and playing the part of Mark in Cocoa Village’s production of Rentallowed Matt to perfect his craft.
“After school, I moved to Atlanta and kept performing,” Brooker says. “So I have been singing and singing, doing what I love and making my way!”
You can hear the musical stylings of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Buble each time Brooker hits a note. His sultry voice soothes the soul.
“I am so excited for my show at Ten,” he says. “We are doing some jazz standards like ‘All of Me,’ ‘Orange Colored Sky,’and some songs from Dear Evan Hansensuch as ‘Waving Through a Window,’ and a duet as well. We are also going to give the audience some throwbacks like ‘Try a Little Tenderness,’ yet with a jazz flair.”
Brooker show harkens back to a time where cabaret ruled the Atlanta scene from the late ‘70s throughout the ‘80s. Those clubs and acts faded away, and Ten looks to correct that with this debut. The bar will be decked to the nines with mood lighting and elegant white tablecloths as the singer transports his audience to the ultimate Jazz fantasy.
“Performing is what I love, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for this opportunity,” Brooker says. “Come on out, everybody. We’re going to have a blast!”
