With a lineup of queens performing from its glory days, shirtless guys dancing and a trio of talent in the DJ booth, Jungle's Saturday night took on a Backstreet feel. Which was exactly the point.
Jungle hosted the Backstreet Reunion Party, its annual celebration of the popular 24-hour dance club that once dominated gay Atlanta nightlife, on Saturday. You know, until it finally closed its doors in 2004 after years of legal wrangling with the city. It's former home on Peachtree Street is now the 36-floor condo building Viewpoint. And its neighbor Armory, which closed within months of Backstreet, was torn down earlier this year to make room for a 23-story apartment building. Sigh.
But the memories of Backstreet live on. The evening took on a special meaning for the 10th anniversary of the closing. It opened with a remake of Charlie Brown's Cabaret emceed by Lena Lust filling in for Brown. The cast included Lily White, Heather Daniels, Monica Van Pelt, Lauren LaMasters and Lateasha Shuntel. Rob Reum, Bill Berdeaux and Bobby Copeland worked the DJ booth.
Phoenix (top photo) and Nicole Paige Brooks were also on hand to mix and mingle.
