Gay GOP group endorses Mitchell, Norwood for Atlanta mayor

Gay GOP group Georgia Log Cabin Republicans looked past two LGBT candidates and endorsed Ceasar Mitchell and Mary Norwood for mayor, while also backing a handful of other candidates in the upcoming city elections.

"In a crowded field of qualified candidates, Ceasar Mitchell and Mary Norwood's record of public service, dedication to constituents, and leadership stand head and shoulders above the rest," the group said in a statement.

"Whether it is passionately fighting LGBT discrimination, tackling LGBT homelessness and HIV outreach, or addressing the concerns of their LGBT constituents (such as green space, transportation and public safety), Ceasar and Mary have consistently brought people together to improve the quality of life for all citizens of Atlanta" the group added.

In backing Mitchell and Norwood, Georgia LCR skipped over two LGBT mayoral candidates – Cathy Woolard and Laban King.

Georgia LCR's president, Jamie Ensley, is Norwood's campaign treasurer.

The group did endorse two LGBT candidates – Alex Wan, the City Council member running for council president, and Kirk Rich, who is running to replace Wan in District 6. The group also backed one of Wan's opponents, City Council member Felicia Moore.

Georgia LCR also endorsed City Council candidates Amir Farokhi, David Orland Brown and Cory Ruth.

"Our chapter has a proud legacy of supporting candidates of all stripes who work together for the greater good of the city of Atlanta and our thriving LGBT community. After all, we have supported Democrats, Republicans and Independents for public office and previous city elections," the group said.

A dozen LGBT candidates are in municipal races across metro Atlanta.
