Brent Star: Jack of all trades, queen of the scene, and king of comedy

Brent Star, Brent Star! Who Do You Think You Are? Local legend Brent Star is a theater connoisseur, drag performer, comedic genius, video blogger, children’s parties entertainer, and his resume goes on and on. Brent Star does it all, okaaaay?!

Pretty much everybody feels that to know him is to love him. Yet, who is Queer Atlanta’s Brent Star, nee Brent Conley?

The man behind the colorful characters opens up with a peek behind the curtain of his one-man, one-of-a-kind show. Of course, the one-line zingers don’t stop, so hop in, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.

Who is Brent Star on and off stage?

Off stage, I'm just a pizza delivery boy for the White House. I don't know which is more cheesy, the pizza or the residents (or this joke). For the rest of my off stage time, I'm a businessman, promoter and a dreamer.

On stage, I'm a host, a comedian, actor and drag artist for all kinds of people and ages. More specifically, I love to tickle people’s funny bonesk [like ending ‘s’ words in ‘sk’].  When I was a kid, I used to do skits imitating "The Carol Burnett Show," then studied theater in high school and college.

I got the name Brent Star performing in Atlanta as a comedian then moved on to one-man shows, which includes me playing a female role here and there. That eventually led to me doing drag. I kept that name Brent Star and eventually went back to stand up and kept the drag. Okaaay, like Tina Turner kept her name, I kept my glitter.

How would you describe your work?

Child, I'm like the little ol' woman who lived in a shoe.  I work like a horse as if I got 15 kids to take care of. I host weekly game shows like my bingo show at Cowtippers on Mondays at 8 pm. I do stand up here and there. I make videos and post crazy posts on social media; I do parties for kids, host comedy shows, and in October I worked on a film with Jennifer Anniston.

Jennifer Anniston! What?!

I only have a teeny tiny part in the film called "Dumplin," but don't get it twisted: I'm very excited about my lil teeny part.  The movie centers around the subject of Dolly Parton. It stars Jennifer Anniston, Kathy Nijimy, with Ginger Ming from "RuPaul’s Drag Race," and two performers you may know from Atlanta, Brigitte Bidet and Brent Star! When the movie comes out in 2018, I can talk more about it. I can't wait!

What’s next?

I have a special holiday Drag Queen Story time gig coming up on Dec. 10 at Posman Books, where we do story time and make drag ginger bread cookies – True story! 15 kids to feed remember! – and a standup gig on Dec. 12 in East Atlanta.

As far as 2018, I'd love to pick back up The Brent Star Show variety show again. If I can do a successful run of that in 2018, I'll be one happy camper.

The world can be a scary place. Any advice?

I've learned so much from all the changes and turmoil going on in the world. Changes are happening almost every day, and you betta learn how to roll with the punches as fast as you can. Ms. Time ain't playing these days! Your whole life can change in a blink!
