Jungle remembered gay Atlanta dance days gone by on Saturday when DJs Rob Reum and Bobby Copeland helmed a Backstreet Reunion complete with Charlie Brown’s Cabaret.
It’s been almost eight years since Atlanta’s 24-hour gay club Backstreet pumped its final beats into the wee hours every weekend, thanks to grumpy neighbors in an ever-gentrifying Midtown ensured its demise.
But plenty of Saturday’s Jungle visitors hold dear their hazy memories of late nights and early mornings on the legendary dance floor. The crowd on Saturday also included a boatload of folks who’ve heard the stories and wanted to get in on the action.
And it wouldn’t be a Backstreet Reunion without Charlie Brown’s Cabaret, the nationally recognized drag-stravaganza that held court upstairs at the club for years. Jungle brought back Charlie Brown and her crew with a cast that included Lily White, Shawnna Brooks, Lena Lust, Heather Daniels, Ashley Kruiz and Lauren LaMasters.
