Gay folks who chow down on Chick-fil-A may make the Baby Jesus cry, and here’s why: The Atlanta-based chain ships truckloads of cash to anti-gay groups, and they’re being called out yet again. This time for “hating gays.”
So free chocolate chunk cookie aside, Business Insider on Thursday lumped Chick-fil-A in with four other companies and organizations—Salvation Army, Walmart, Exxon-Mobil and Boy Scouts—that hate the gays. Their takedown on including Chick-fil-A is pretty on point, too.
According to Equality Matters’ analysis of the restaurant’s donations, its contributions of nearly $2 million is more than the group has given in any other year “for which public records are available.” These contributions compound the estimated $5 million in donations Chick-Fil-A made to anti-gay groups between 2003 and 2010.
These associations have prompted the “No H8 Campaign” to call for a boycott of the chicken sandwich shop. Many New York University students were also offended by these contributions, and unsuccessfully tried to close down a Chick-Fil-A outlet on campus.
The Business Insider piece prompted a follow-up on Friday from the Atlanta Business Chronicle when it asked “Chick-fil-A among anti-gay companies?” There’s really no need to question whether it’s true. It is. Couch the statement however you must, but ABC’s post prompted a response from Chick-fil-A.
Chick-fil-A told Atlanta Business Chronicle in a statement it values everyone and works to treat everyone with a caring spirit.
“At Chick-fil-A, we have a genuine commitment to hospitality for all of our guests,” the chain said in the statement. “We have no agenda, policy or position against anyone. We have a 65-year history of providing hospitality for all people and, as a dedicated family business, serving and valuing everyone regardless of their beliefs or opinions.”
