Just a handful of Atlanta-based companies love the gays so perfectly that thy scored a 100 on a new ranking of how they address LGBT workplace policies, benefits and consumers. And Chick-fil-A? Do you really need to ask?
Gone are the glory days of 11 metro Atlanta companies notching a perfect score on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. That hasn’t happened since 2010. HRC released the 2013 edition of the report on Wednesday.
Now just six Atlanta-based companies sit atop the list with a 100 and three of those are law firms: Alston & Bird, Coca-Cola, ING North America Insurance, SunTrust, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan and Troutman Sanders. SunTrust improved its score of 90 from last year to 100 this time around, while United Parcel Service lost its perfection and received a 90. (UPS should get some bonus points for stopping its grants to the Boy Scouts.)
But similar to the 2012 rankings, the lack of transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage kept several Atlanta-based companies from scoring a perfect 100. The report rates companies on 40 policies and practices related to LGBT employees and their families. A record 252 businesses received a score of 100.
In Atlanta, Chick-fil-A scored a big doughnut surprising no one. But that spry redhead, Wendy’s, also did poorly. The third-largest quick-service hamburger company notched a sorry 30.
Of the six Atlanta-area companies scoring a 100, just two took part in the Atlanta Pride parade in October, one of the region’s most visible annual LGBT events (photos). That was Coke and SunTrust. Others in the HRC rankings that did take part in the parade include Delta, Newell Rubbermaid, SunTrust, UPS, Home Depot and InterContinental Hotels Group
