People poured into Piedmont Park on Sunday in droves to honor loved ones lost and to raise funds so that future generations can live with and ultimately conquer AIDS.
The 25th annual AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run was greeted by beautiful, if a little chilly, weather. Select panels of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt were on display, and speakers included original “Dreamgirls” and “Moesha” cast member Sheryl Lee Ralph, WSB-TV’s Jovita Moore, and gay city council member Alex Wan.
An overall tally of funds raised was not available on Monday, but organizers are still collecting funds toward a published $1.25 million goal, according to the event website. Donations are being accepted through Nov. 30.
General donation funds go to AID Atlanta, while teams for other local non-profits walked to collect funds for themselves: Aniz, Jerusalem House, Living Room, Open Hand and Positive Impact Health Centers. Additionally, this year AIDS Walk Atlanta and 5K Run expanded its participating organizations to include Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition and NAESM.
Race results from the 5K Run star with first-place finisher Erick White, who crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. Thomas Barker clocked in second at 17:38; Andrew Sullivan finished in 18:39; and Ali Dawson ran the race in 18:57. Dawson was the top female finisher.
